The active ingredients of Picoprep® are sodium picosulfate and magnesium citrate. Sodium Picosulfate is a topically acting stimulant laxative that stimulates the mucosa of both the colon and rectum. Magnesium Citrate acts as an osmotic laxative by retaining fluid in the colon. The combined action of the two ingredients has a “cleansing” effect on the intestines.

The Picoprep® powder for oral solution is supplied in sachets containing sodium picosulfate and magnesium citrate (from magnesium oxide and citric acid) as active ingredients.
In the package, the patient receives the following:
- 2 linked sachets of powder (separated by perforation strip)
- 1 measuring spoon for child dosage
- Package Leaflet (see also Downloads)

The PicoPrep® sachets do not need to be refrigerated.
Picoprep® is a powder taken as a drink after dissolving in a clear liquid (water, black coffee, tea, soft drinks, clear broth and fruit juice without pulp). The powder comes in a pack of 2 linked sachets. The pairs of sachets can be separated by tearing the perforated strip.
A low-residue diet is recommended the day before treatment. A diet containing only clear liquids is recommended on the day of treatment. To prevent dehydration, following the fluid intake as indicated in the Picoprep® treatment protocol (see dosage tab) is essential. In addition, a regular thirst-induced intake of clear liquids is also recommended. Fluid intake should not be limited to drinking water only.
If the drink becomes warm during preparation, wait a while before drinking it until it has cooled down sufficiently.

Dosage and hydration for adults (including the elderly) and older children:
The standard dose for adults and older children is two sachets. The sachets are taken depending on the scheduled time of the procedure. The entire contents of a sachet are dissolved in a cup of water (about 150 ml) and stirred for 2-3 minutes.
- The first sachet should be taken 10 to 18 hours before the procedure, followed by at least 5 x 250 ml of clear liquid (not just water), spread over several hours.
- The second sachet is taken 4 to 6 hours before the procedure, followed by at least 3 x 250 ml of clear liquid (not just water), spread over several hours.
- Clear liquid (not just water) may be taken up to 2 hours before hospital treatment.
Dosage and hydration for children under nine years old:
An adjusted dose applies to children under 9 years of age. A measuring spoon is in the package to measure the correct dosage for young children. The required amount of powder is dissolved in 2-3 minutes while stirring. For this, 50 ml of clear liquid per measuring spoon is recommended. The remainder of the sachets is discarded.
The first dose should be taken 10 to 18 hours, and the second dose 4 to 6 hours before the procedure (as in adults).
Dosage:
- From 1 to 2 years: first dose and the second dose is 1 level measuring spoon
- From 2 to 4 years: first dose and the second dose is 2 level measuring spoons
- From 4 to 9 years: the first dose is one full sachet and the second dose is 2 level measuring spoons
It is recommended to run a straight, flat object, such as the blunt side of a knife, across the full measuring spoon to obtain a flat surface of the powder. One level measuring spoon will then contain a quarter of the contents of the sachet (i.e. 4 g of powder).
Hydration:
Maintaining hydration in children is very important. Guidelines for the treatment of dehydration in children should be followed to ensure adequate hydration during treatment with Picoprep®. Clear liquid (not just water) may be taken up to 2 hours before hospital treatment.
