Pentasa® Compact contains sachets with loose microgranules. The intestinal passage and release of mesalazine after oral administration are independent of concomitant ingestion with food. In the tablets, the micro granules are compressed. In the small and large intestines, mesalazine is gradually released from these micro granules, resulting in a local anti-inflammatory effect.

Pentasa® tablet does not require refrigerated storage.
There are no special rules for the time of taking Pentasa® sachets and tablets. The patient can take either drug before, during or after a meal. The granules and tablets must be swallowed whole (without chewing).
The entire contents of a Pentasa® Compact sachet should be taken in one go. The micro granules from the sachet can be taken with a sip of water or, for example, sprinkled over the yoghurt.

The dosage of Pentasa® sachets and tablets should be adjusted to the severity of the disease.
Adults and older children.
In the acute phase of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, the sachets and tablets can be dosed with up to 4 g daily in single or multiple doses. As maintenance treatment, the dose can be gradually reduced to 2 g per day according to the course of the disease. In the interest of good adherence to therapy, the once-daily variant is preferred.
Paediatrics.
There is only limited documentation of an effect in children (aged 6-18 years). It is generally recommended to give half the adult dose to children weighing up to 40 kg and the average adult dose to children weighing more than 40 kg.
Depending on the individual response to treatment, a doctor may decide in consultation with the patient to combine the use of the sachets or tablets with other medicines. The tapering schedule below is an example of a combination therapy for IBD in which different drugs are combined.
