Cortiment®MMX is an oral dosage form of the corticosteroid budesonide with a local effect in the intestines. The tablets with MMX technology are characterized by matrix polymers coated with a gastro-resistant film that releases the budesonide at a controlled rate only in the lower part of the intestine (at pH above 7) at a controlled rate.
The exact mechanism of action of budesonide in the treatment of UC and MC is not fully understood. In general, budesonide inhibits many inflammatory processes. At doses clinically equivalent to prednisolone, Cortiment®MMX provides significantly less hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression and has less impact on inflammatory markers.
